Meet the Miracle Maker: Omar Torres

When it comes to kids, Omar Torres has a soft spot. As part of Lazer Broadcasting’s annual Children’s Miracle Network Radiothon, he spends time with UC Davis Children’s Hospital pediatric patients … and cherishes every minute of it.

Held each September, this three-day Radiothon event raises money for Children’s Miracle Network at UC Davis. As an on-air personality and promotions director for Latino 97.9 and 103.3 FM, Torres sets aside time to interview hospitalized children and their families. Both pre-recorded and live segments are produced and then shared with his radio audience.

Despite numerous interviews with kids facing all types of health challenges, Torres never tires of hearing the miracle stories. His favorite part? Seeing the kids smile. “Seeing their faces in a happy moment … it sticks with you,” said Torres. And keeps him coming back.

How long have you been involved with Children’s Miracle Network at UC Davis? What has your involvement looked like over time? I have been involved for more than four years now. It has been such a pleasure!

There are so many good causes. Why did you choose to support UC Davis Children’s Hospital? When I found out about Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) and everything they do for the kids at UC Davis Children’s Hospital, I couldn’t wait to get involved. I am so proud to be part of it.

How has being involved with UC Davis Children’s Hospital changed your life? Your family’s life? Being a part of this effort has made me and my family appreciate every second of our lives.

What motivates you as a volunteer? Every time I interview a family and listen to their story, it motivates me. I want to do more so families in these situations have the support they need.

What do you think about every time you volunteer for UC Davis Children’s Hospital? When I am on my way to the hospital or meeting with a family for a radio interview, I always think to myself, “I can’t wait to see these kids smile again.”

What do you think is the most important thing people don’t know about this hospital? UC Davis Children’s Hospital and CMN help everyone, no matter the health challenge or where they come from.

What would you say to people about why they should invest in the health of children’s hospitals? I would tell them that they have no idea what their donation can achieve. It can help make miracles!

Lazer Radiothon 2018 runs September 26-28 with live broadcasts from the station and Culichi Town restaurant on Arden Way.
